Microsoft finally drops the Nokia brand. The brightly colored Lumia devices that were previously made in Finland may just be called Microsoft Lumia. That reports The Verge. The change of name starts in France, after which other countries also have to deal with the new name.

The name Microsoft Lumia will be used for the social channels Facebook, Twitter and other social media. According to Microsoft Netherlands nothing has yet been communicated about the change of name of the devices, but that could well be Microsoft Lumia.

Also the name Windows Phone would no longer be used, although it is not clear what the plans are. Windows Phone is the name of the operating system.

The name change does not come as a surprise. Nokia sold its mobile branch to Microsoft, in which the latter already invested heavily, and Nokia Finland continues as a network and services company. Continuing the name Nokia for mobile devices would not be logical.
