The Finnish manufacturer Nokia is going to scrap another 10, 000 jobs and close research sites in Germany and Canada and the factory in the Finnish town of Salo. That is what the company has announced today.

The Nokia Lumia devices do not seem to have saved the Finnish company yet. Nokia wants to cut 1.6 billion euros in costs by the end of next year. This is necessary now that the loss for the second quarter will be higher than initially expected. Forty thousand jobs have already been canceled since 2010.

The luxury brand Vertu is sold to the private equity firm EQT VI.

Nokia today also announced the departure of directors, including Niklas Savander, Mary McDowell and Jerri DeVard.

Nokia continues to bet on smartphones with Windows Phone as operating system, but analysts remain gloomy about the recovery. Nokia has lost seventy billion euros since Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007 and Google launched its Android system. Nokia did not respond in time.

In the first quarter, two million Lumia devices with Windows Phone were sold, while Apple delivered 35.1 million iPhones.

Incidentally, Nokia will not just divest: just now the company announces that it takes over the technology, patents and developers of the Swedish Scalado, specialized in mobile photo applications.

The share of Nokia in the Helsinki stock market reached the lowest point since 1996 this morning.
