Apple bombards Flipboard to iPad app of 2010

Flipboard, the iPad app that collects links from social network feeds and content from other sites to create a personalized, social magazine for the iPad, may call itself the iPad app of the year.

The popular Flipboard application also shows content from friends, from sources where the user himself is not subscribed. Flipboard managed to ascend to the most downloaded news application for all countries where the tablet is available within two days of launch. The company behind the application previously announced that it had taken over Ellerdale, the start-up of the Dutch Arthur van Hoff, which makes use of a semantic analysis on multiple real-time data streams.

Apple is highlighting several apps at the end of the year. Osmos is the most popular iPad game of the year, Flipboard, next to the main winner, the most popular iPad app of the year. For the iPhone, Hipstamatic is the app of the year and Plants Vs. Zombies the most popular iPhone game of the year.

Apple ventures to more overview lists. For both iPhone apps and iPad apps, several top 10 lists were created.

The ten most popular paid iPad apps are Pages, GoodReader for iPad, Numbers, Angry Birds HD, Keynote, Glee Karaoke, WolframAlpha, Pinball HD, Friendly for Facebook and Star Walk for iPad.

The top ten free iPad apps are iBooks, Pandora Radio, Netflix, Google Mobile App, Solitaire, Movies by Flixster - with Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb Movies & TV, Kindle, Google Earth and Virtuoso Piano Free 2 HD.

There are no magazines in the list for the best paid iPad apps and the best free iPad apps. For the different countries, Apple listed a number of different categories. For example, there are the categories 'keep contact', 'making music', 'games with friends' and 'working remotely'.

In category 'news and magazines in the Netherlands include the following iPad apps: De Telegraaf HD, NRC Handelsblad, AutoWeek Magazine, De Telegraaf newspaper, RTL Nieuws and The Iconist Intl. An overview of other categories for the Netherlands can be found in iTunes.
