Innovation is at the heart of this year's International Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) in Berlin, the largest consumer electronics exhibition in Europe. The fair opens its doors to the retail trade tomorrow.

The offer has never been so diverse. Amazon and IBM will be talking about smart living, but smart home robots will also attract attention this year, just like augmented reality, large format Ultra HD screens, wearables and digital health.

Today the exhibition is only open for the press and Friday for the retail trade. The general public may only visit the immense fair from Saturday. That audience is presented with a concert by the famous duo Yello on stage at the Sommergarten.

Later today Segway, Germin, Philips (plus TPVision), Sony and Toshiba hold press conferences. LG unveils its long-awaited flagship V30 smartphone. Samsung already picked out yesterday, including new wearables.

IFA started radio equipment 93 years ago and even Albert Einstein has once again opened the exhibition. The exhibition attracted 1823 exhibitors and 240, 000 visitors last year. Business is also done on the stock exchange, last year even for 4.5 billion euros.

New this year is a complete hall dedicated to innovations. In Hall 26, under the name IFA Next, startups can show their potential in a variety of fields. Twenty new startups are presented every day, including in the areas of wearables, smart home and VR.

The startups will have stands in a round arena with a podium in the middle for lectures on innovations. Dutchman Pieter Nota from Philips is allowed to kick off tomorrow.

For the first time there will also be an Android developers congress, droidcon Berlin 2017, for which a thousand participants are expected.

The emphasis on innovation is part of a re-profiling of IFA. The organizers want to separate brands from component suppliers like Foxconn. They get their own IFA Global Markets event a few kilometers away from the exhibition grounds (Station Berlin in Gleisdreieck).

IFA is still held until 6 September. A mobile app is available for visitors.
