Nine Overijssel municipalities and investment company CIF have reached an agreement on the construction of optical fiber in the outlying area.

Investor CIF (Rabobank Construction Fund Communication Infrastructure Fund) will construct fiber optics in Deventer, Ommen, Dalfsen, Olst-Wijhe, Raalte, Hengelo, Haaksbergen, Enschede and Losser. CIF thinks that costs can be reduced by digging less deeply.

It is still unclear when the installation of fiber can now be started.

The agreement is a bright spot in a stagnating market. According to Stratix, the growth in the number of new optical fiber connections in 2015 was the lowest of the past five years. The expected growth to 3.5 million connections in 2017 is far from being achieved. mainly because KPN invests less.

KPN did, however, subscribe subscribers to its fiber optic network in 2015. The annual figures show that the number of fiber optic subscribers has risen by 26 percent to 722, 000 in one year.
