The fact that consumers research and book their travels online puts pressure on the travel industry to innovate. The newly created Travel Impact Lab must help the parties.

The initiators of the lab, which is described as a community in which travel, impact and innovation are connected, are Marius Appelman (Rickshaw Travel), Michel Groenenstijn (developer) and Gijs van den Boom (Acato).

The lab arose from the realization that it can be very difficult for existing companies to come up with innovative ideas and that good ideas often come from outside. Bringing people and companies into contact with each other creates a new dynamic where innovation can flourish, is the reasoning.

"Successful concepts such as Airbnb and Uber were also conceived by people who did not come from the travel industry. These founders managed to conquer the market themselves, but there are plenty of ingenious ideas that remain because the originators do not have starting capital, do not know where to start or do not know anything about the travel industry ", says Groenenstijn. "We can help with that."

Responsible initiatives

The lab mainly focuses on initiatives that contribute to the world. "We have deliberately chosen to focus on ideas with impact, because we are convinced that only positive innovations have a chance of success in the long term, " says Groenenstijn.

The lab works with an accelerator program in which startups, students and established travel organizations are brought together. Under intensive supervision they work for four months on an idea or project to arrive at a promising solution as soon as possible. A network of investors is ready to make the next step possible, according to the initiators. Nevertheless, the lab has no profit motive. By not focusing on profit but on impact the founders think they can achieve more success.

Various partners have already joined the Travel Impact Lab, including ANVR, NHTV and Triodos Bank.
